Youth Programs
The Black Achievers program is a national YMCA program that is designed to
encourage minority youth to set and achieve high educational and professional
goals. The program was started in 1971 by Dr. Leo Marsh at the Harlem Branch
YMCA, in New York City, and is now operating in many YMCAs throughout the United
States.
The YMCA of Hagerstown Black Achievers program provides educational and career
opportunities to students in 6th—12th grade. The program instills positive
social values, and ignites the thirst for knowledge. Students are given the
opportunity to reach their full potential by participating in educational forums
and interacting with positive role models.
The primary group activities for the youth of the Black Achievers Program
takes place on alternating Sundays from 3—5 pm at the YMCA throughout
the school year in Cluster meetings. Cluster Sessions provide students with
exposure to academics, leadership, career opportunities and life skills. Clusters
can include the following pending adult Leadership.
- Arts and Culture
- Business
- Computers and Technology
- Educators
- Medical
- Law and Government
Financial Aid available for those who apply and qualify.
Youth And Government
The Hagerstown YMCA is looking for Teachers and Students interested in the
complete Government Experience. YMCA Youth and Government is a Statewide program
designed for children ages 8th through 12th grade, that want to become involved
in learning about Maryland State Government.
This program is a 6 month – program designed to teach students the procedures
of Bill writing and debate. You will have the opportunity to write, debate,
and defend your bill on a statewide basis with over 200 hundred other High
School students throughout Maryland.
This program also has a three day stay in Annapolis where the General assembly
will take place.
